How to Use an AI Homework Helper Without Wasting the Homework
On this page

Homework is mostly pointless once you've seen the answer. What a teacher is actually grading, whether they say so or not, is the part where you get stuck, try something, get it wrong and try again. An AI homework helper that hands you the solution deletes exactly that, and you end up with a finished sheet and an empty head.

So use one. Just not first.

Give it ten minutes alone

Ten's arbitrary, pick your own number. Work the problem on paper, get it wrong if you have to, and write down where you stalled. "I don't know how to start" is fine, but "I don't know why the denominator flipped" gives whoever (or whatever) is helping you something to work with.

Ask for the smallest hint

Most people paste the question in and take whatever comes back, usually a full solution that they skim and forget by dinner. Ask for the least you can get away with instead:

Here's the problem and what I've tried. Don't solve it. Tell me what to look at next, in one or two sentences.

Still stuck? Ask for a bigger hint, and keep going until you can finish it on your own. Slower, yes. It's also the only version where you learn anything.

Then check it, then do another

Once you've got an answer, ask the AI to look for mistakes in your working. It's decent at that, and it's a better job for it than writing everything from scratch, since you've already done the thinking. But don't treat its word as final. These tools can get arithmetic wrong and sound sure about it, so compare numbers against your textbook or the worked examples from class.

The test we'd trust is closing everything and trying a similar problem cold. If you can't, you've only watched so far.

Check your school's policy before you paste a single question. Some teachers allow AI for explanations and ban it on graded work, some ban it outright, and "I didn't know" rarely goes down well. Nobody enjoys that part, but it matters.

Piply's assignment solver takes typed questions as well as photos and PDFs, and we'd rather you open it after an honest attempt than before one. The Tutor works through one concept at a time instead of dumping a full solution, if you'd rather go that route.
